Privacy policy

Nanaimo Vote does not offer public user accounts. You can browse candidate and election information, filter candidates and compare their positions without registering.

Mailing-list subscriptions

If you choose to subscribe to our mailing list, we collect your email address to send you the updates you requested. Subscribing is optional, and you can unsubscribe at any time. Your subscription is not linked to your browsing activity, filters, candidate selections or comparisons.

Your candidate selections and comparisons

Candidate selections, shortlists, filters and comparisons are handled entirely in your browser and stored only temporarily for the current browser session. They are not sent to or stored on our servers, associated with an account or saved by us between visits.

These features are personal organizational tools. We do not collect, publish, share or analyze your selections, use them to recommend candidates, or aggregate them to measure or report political preferences.

Accounts and candidate access

Visitors cannot create an account on Nanaimo Vote.

Candidates may receive private access to manage content on their own profiles. This access does not authorize changes to other candidates' profiles or access to administrative tools or visitor information.

Candidate profile information submitted for publication is separate from visitors’ private browser-session activity.

How we use information you provide

We use mailing-list email addresses to manage subscriptions and send requested updates. If you contact us or submit candidate content for publication, we use the information you choose to provide to respond to your request or manage that content.

We do not sell personal information or share mailing-list email addresses with candidates, campaigns, political organizations or advertisers. We do not collect voter preferences or candidate-selection information.

Service providers

We use service providers to host the website and deliver email, including mailing-list updates and private candidate links. They may process information needed to provide those services. We also use Google Analytics as described below. We do not send any service provider visitors’ selections, filters or comparisons.

Analytics and advertising

We use limited analytics and monitoring to understand website traffic, maintain site performance and identify technical issues. This information is not used for advertising, campaign strategy, political profiling or candidate recommendations.

We use Google Analytics to measure basic page traffic, such as which pages are visited, approximate location, device and browser type, and how visitors arrive at the site. Google Analytics uses cookies and receives your IP address to do this. We have turned off Google signals and ad personalization, and we do not send Google your email address, candidate selections, filters, comparisons or any other preferences. You can block Google Analytics using your browser's privacy settings, a content blocker, or Google's opt-out browser add-on.

The site does not accept candidate advertising, paid promotion or sponsorship.

Data retention and deletion

Browser-session selections, filters and comparisons are temporary and are not retained by us. There is no public account or server-side comparison history to delete.

You can unsubscribe from the mailing list at any time and contact us to request deletion of your email address. Information provided through correspondence or candidate submissions may be retained as reasonably necessary to operate the website, maintain submission records and comply with applicable legal obligations.
